From my uncle’s family home to Tannenblick holiday home in the Muldental valley
Tannenblick was designed and built by my uncle Herbert in the early 1970s as a private family home. I often visited as a child and always felt there was something special about the house.
Some houses are simply houses. Others become part of the family.
An architect builds his own home
Herbert was an architect. Between 1971 and 1973, he designed and built the house for his own family – not as a holiday home, but as a very personal place to live.
Perhaps that is why Tannenblick still feels different from many holiday homes today. The architecture wasn’t designed for an anonymous target audience, but for people who were actually going to live here.
The original layout, distinctive architectural features and many details from that era have been preserved to this day.

Modern comfort meets a touch of nostalgia
When renovating Tannenblick, it was important to me not to smooth away its character.
I renovated and modernised the house myself, but deliberately chose not to turn a 1970s architect-designed home into just another contemporary holiday house.
Instead, modern comfort now sits alongside original features: the 1970s furniture, distinctive lines and the original fireplace still tell the story of the time when Herbert and his family lived here.
The fireplace cannot currently be used, unfortunately – but it remains in its original place as part of the story of the house.
Why “Tannenblick”?
The name actually dates back further than the holiday home itself.
The plot used to be almost completely surrounded by tall fir trees. Some of them are still standing along one side of the property today, forming a natural boundary between the house and the road.
That feeling stayed with me – and eventually became the inspiration for the name Tannenblick.
Although not all of the fir trees remain and the property has changed over the years, the name is a little reminder of the house as I remember it from my childhood.
From family home to holiday home
After Herbert passed away, I didn’t want to simply sell the house. At the same time, I wasn’t ready to live here myself.
So I decided to give the house a new purpose.
I renovated and modernised it myself, while trying to preserve as much as possible of what makes it special.
Today, other people can stay in the place where my family once lived.
A house with a past – and a future
Today, Tannenblick is a holiday home for families, friends and several generations – a place for people to spend time together without having to compromise on comfort.
Some things are new, others have stayed just as they were. For me, it is this combination that gives the house its character.
And perhaps there is something rather lovely about a house that was originally created as a family home now bringing people together once again.
Two buildings. One story.
Herbert didn’t just design the main house that is now Tannenblick. He also designed the adjoining pool house.
Today, the pool house stands on the neighbouring property and is operated independently from the holiday home. Guests staying at Tannenblick can choose to book exclusive use of the wellness area for their group.
So two buildings Herbert once designed have become a rather special combination: a holiday home with a story, alongside a year-round wellness retreat.
